Bunker Ilbenstadt – Civil Protection and Cold War Legacy

Constructed in 1965 near Niddatal, the Ilbenstadt Bunker was designed as a civil defense command center. Originally part of a larger plan to build eight such centers around Frankfurt, it was completed and handed over to Frankfurt City on May 5, 1970.

The bunker was fully self-sustaining for up to 30 days, equipped with:

Water, air, and power supplies
Climate control, medical facilities, sanitation, and a kitchen
Capable of sheltering 92 people for up to four weeks.

Sensitive areas within the bunker were shock-resistant to protect from electromagnetic pulses (EMP) caused by nuclear explosions.
